Through Visual Art, students are encouraged to express themselves creatively. At MCC, Visual Art courses provide the opportunity for student artists to try out a wide range of art mediums. Middle Schoolers get to experience drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital art forms in both Middle School Art and Middle School Digital Art.
After learning the foundations in Art I, High School artists open up their options to beginning courses in Painting, Drawing, Pottery, Digital Art, and a continued study of general Art. These classes allow for a student to dive deeper into a specific art form and are available through the advanced level.
Seeing that the world of Art is more widespread than the classroom is also an important part of the Art curriculum. These firsthand experiences open minds to the possibility of Art as a career or lifelong passion! Each year, students participate in such outings as ArtPrize, the Muskegon Museum of Art, and Frederik Meijer Gardens.
Student Artists are also encouraged to create art at their best level and enter it into Art competitions and shows such as:
Betten Student Art Walk
Catholic Schools Art Show
Celebrate the Arts at Muskegon Catholic Central
Congressional Art Contest
Crosley Custom Cruiser Contest
Michigan Art Education Association Regional Show
Muskegon Museum of Art’s Expressions Show
Scholastic Art AwardsWest Michigan Showcase
In addition, interested students in 9-12th grade are invited to join the National Art Honor Society. This organization plans the holiday Ornament Sale fundraiser, murals around the school, and other creative community projects.
