MUSKEGON - It’s the dawn of an exciting new era for Muskegon Catholic Central athletics, and a prominent local media service will be on hand to report all the highlights.

After years of great success in many varsity sports – particularly it’s legendary football program – MCC is starting fresh with the return of Athletic Director Trevor Hinshaw, who had great success in his previous stint in that position at the school, followed by an amazing 10-year run as AD at Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

The Crusaders will also be be turning the page in football this season, with the debut of new head coach Scott Fodrocy, an MCC graduate, former player and former assistant coach.

This winter, Nick Bronsema, a veteran coach who has had a lot of success at Orchard View and Hart, will take over the girls varsity basketball team, while Josh Kutchinski, who has coached at Holton and at the college level, will take over the boys team.

On top of all of that, Crusader fans – and sports enthusiasts throughout the area – will be able to follow MCC sports more closely than ever before in the 2025-26 high school season, thanks to a new media coverage agreement between the school and MuskegonSports.com.

Beginning with the fall season, which starts in less than a month, the staff of reporters and photographers at MuskegonSports.com will provide their own unique brand of comprehensive coverage of all MCC varsity sports.

Veteran journalists Mitch Boatman, Andrew Johnson, Dave Hart, Jeremy Clark and Tyler Lirones, along with newcomers Pierson VanGorp, James Herold, Nick Fuller, Daniel Dunn and Demetrio Lopez, will be working to bring the MCC story to life for readers.

The Muskegon Sports coverage model is unique. Unlike regional news outlets that try to cover teams from dozens of schools at the same time – and never really dedicate very much coverage to any of them – the staff at MuskegonSports.com focuses exclusively on its client schools.

That means there will be reports from every MCC varsity game and match in very sport throughout the 2025-26 high school season, as well as feature stories on coaches and selected players, profiles of every varsity athlete, and other in-depth stories about the Muskegon Catholic sports experience.

Having a dedicated media company means Crusader teams will have more coverage than 99 percent of other teams across the country.

“When Muskegon Catholic inquired about our services this summer, we couldn’t help but be excited,” said Steve Gunn, editor of MuskegonSports.com.

Gunn noted MCC’s athletic success of the years – a total of 13 state football championships, along with four state titles in boys golf, two in girls track and field, and one apiece in baseball, boys cross country and boys tennis.

“It isn’t every day that a sports news service gets the opportunity to work closely with, and focus on a high school athetic program with such an amazing track record of success,” he said. “Coaches and administrators at MCC have changed over the years, but that winning mentality, and the pride of having such a successful tradition, has transcended the generations.

“We can’t wait to start to delivering the type of thorough sports news coverage that everyone at MCC has deserved for years. And I have no doubt that it won’t be long before we are delivering the news about more Crusader championships.”

Hinshaw, who has spent the summer diving into his second tenure as MCC athletic director, said he’s excited about working with the school’s very experienced coaching staff, including Steve Schuitema (baseball), Austin Bectel (volleyball), Julie Walkenhorst (cross country, track), Barry Kieft (girls golf, wrestling, junior varsity baseball), PJ Mitchell (wrestling), Dayne Robinson (girls soccer) and Rhine Mosher (tennis).

Hinshaw is also happy to work with MuskegonSports.com, so MCC’s teams and athletes can get the kind of exposure they deserve.
